Climate change is recognized globally as a significant environmental threat that has far-reaching effects on public health. In Nigeria, climate change contributes to the emergence and exacerbation of various health issues, including the spread of infectious diseases, malnutrition, and respiratory illnesses (Oluwaseun & Babajide, 2023). Healthcare professionals are key players in addressing these health challenges, as they are often the first responders to climate-related health issues in their communities. However, there is a lack of comprehensive research on the level of awareness of climate change among healthcare professionals in Nigeria, particularly in states like Kano, where environmental changes such as increasing temperatures, droughts, and altered rainfall patterns are increasingly prevalent.
This study aims to assess the level of climate change awareness among healthcare professionals in Kano State and explore the extent to which such knowledge influences their approach to healthcare delivery, especially in relation to climate-sensitive diseases.
Despite the increasing recognition of climate change as a major public health issue, there is limited evidence on the awareness of climate change among healthcare professionals in Kano State. This lack of awareness may hinder the effectiveness of healthcare responses to climate-related health issues. Given the rising health risks associated with climate change, such as heat-related illnesses, vector-borne diseases, and respiratory conditions, it is critical to understand the knowledge base of healthcare professionals in order to enhance climate change preparedness in the health sector.
This study will focus on healthcare professionals in Kano State, including doctors, nurses, and other health workers. The scope will cover their knowledge, attitudes, and practices related to climate change. Limitations include potential biases in self-reported data from healthcare workers and the challenge of assessing the impact of awareness on healthcare delivery in real-time situations.
